Triticale is hybrid between ryecorn (secale) and wheat (triticum) with agronomic advantages for the grower. These advantages include, tolerance to environmental stresses such as moisture and water logging and soil borne diseases such as fusarium root diseases and take-all. It also produces grain of excellent nutritional quality for end uses due to a similar digestible energy content and amino acid content/amino acid digestibility profile to that of wheat, and a better nutritional profile compared with barley.
Like all crops, planning is essential prior to planting. Factors such as paddock selection, rotation, markets all need to be considered and then the most suitable cultivar should be chosen to accommodate these factors.
